Jupp Heynckes: Criticism of Bayern is justified

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has admitted the criticism of his team’s recent performances is fair, but insisted that he is the one to blame.

Despite a superb start to the campaign, the Bavarian giant now finds itself in third place in the Bundesliga going into this weekend, and on Wednesday the club lost 1-0 to Basel in the first leg of a Champions League last-16 encounter.

The veteran trainer, who rejoined Bayern in the summer for his third spell at the club, believes his men are playing a poor brand of football at the moment.

“We have a precarious situation. We are not playing consistent or even comprehensible football. The criticism is justified, even against me. I am the person responsible for all,” Heynckes told Bild. “The personal interests of the individual players must be put aside. The team spirit comes before all, we need to quickly become a unit. We must go all together in one direction.”

Bayern players were given a day off on Friday with tensions running high in the camp, especially after Thomas Muller and Holger Badstuber clashed in the changing room after their surprise midweek European defeat.

The side has been struggling for goals of late and has now gone 240 minutes without scoring in all competitions. Yet Heynckes has confirmed he will not change his formation from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2.

“You can play just as offensively with one striker as with two,” he concluded.
